Details

An exceptional painting from Sluijters’ most experimental period. Sluijters built up this extraordinary work from small patches, dots and stripes. The great variety of strokes enabled the artist to achieve an unprecedented effect. Thick and thin brushstrokes, coloured squares, tiny bright stripes and undulating lines lend the entire picture a swirling movement. 'Buurtje in Amsterdam' is an early example of the experimental style that would become known as luminism, which shocked critics in the Netherlands. Sluijters developed this style after witnessing the height of modern art in Paris. Piet Mondriaan and Leo Gestel, too, were to work in this style.

Over J.C.B. (JAN) SLUIJTERS
