Limburgs Museum Acquires Breitner's "Portrait of the Writer Frans Erens" | Presented by Kunstgalerij Albricht at TEFAF Maastricht 2026

TEFAF is pleased to announce that Limburgs Museum has recently acquired “Portrait of the Writer Frans Erens”, a small oil painting by George Hendrik Breitner, presented by Kunstgalerij Albricht during TEFAF Maastricht.

Painted in 1887, at a pivotal moment in both Breitner’s and Erens’ careers, the portrait brings together two influential figures in Dutch art and literary history. It depicts Frans Erens, the pioneering Limburg-born writer and member of the “Tachtigers” (“The Eighties Movement”), an influential Dutch literary movement that shaped Dutch literature in the late nineteenth century through its focus on everyday life and social realism. The acquisition marks an important addition to the Limburgs Museum’s collection, celebrating both the region’s cultural heritage and the work of one of the Netherlands’ most celebrated painters. The portrait will go on view as part of the museum’s new permanent collection presentation, opening in 2027.
