Biography

D. (DIRK) SMORENBERG
1883 Alkmaar - 1960 Oud-Loosdrecht

Dirk Smorenberg was one of Holland's few Art Deco painters as well as a self-taught artist. Both Dirk and his friend Dirk Filarski were inspired by Swiss expressionist Ferdinand Hodler. He lived in Alkmaar and Bergen and traveled with Filarski through Europe and the United States. In 1924, he settled in Oud-Loosdrecht. Inspired by his new surroundings, from then on he painted mainly flowers, decorative landscapes and water lilies, for which he drew inspiration from the watery North Holland landscape. For most of his works he designed a matching frame.
