G. (GUSTAVE) DE SMET

The Belgian painter Gustave De Smet is considered one of the founding figures of Flemish Expressionism. Between approximately 1888 and 1895, he studied at the Ghent Academy. A crucial step in his development was his 1908 move to Sint-Martens-Latem on the Lys, where he joined a close-knit group of painters, including Constant Permeke, Frits van den Berghe, and his brother Leon, later known as the Latem School. During this period, De Smet painted Symbolist river landscapes, forest and garden views, and blossoming orchards in an Impressionist style, full of lyrical atmosphere. He only broke completely with Impressionism after 1914, when he lived in the Netherlands for four years, befriended Leo Gestel, and was influenced by the Bergen School.
