L. (LOUIS) SOONIUS

Lodewijk (Louis) Soonius was a draughtsman and painter best known for his sunny, cheerfully colored beach scenes with children playing and donkeys. He grew up in a Roman Catholic family in The Hague. He attended the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague starting in 1905. In1913 Soonius won the Royal Grant for Free Painting. After World War I, Soonius joined the Hague Sketch Club and gradually became more widely known. From the late 1920s, his earnings declined and he began illustrating books. The following years improved financially and he was allowed to portray Queen Wilhelmina for the Batavian Petroleum Company. Just before World War II, he exhibited at the Rijksmuseum.
