Over G.J.H. (GEO) POGGENBEEK

Poggenbeek belonged to the so-called second generation of the Hague School. A skilled watercolourist and etcher, he used brighter, more vivid colours than was customary within the School, and is best known for his landscapes with cattle. He was a close friend of Nicolaas Bastert, with whom he travelled extensively. His work is held in most museums with nineteenth-century collections, both at home and abroad. Given the period in which it was painted, this watercolour of cows can be called progressive: its high horizon is markedly more modern than was then customary. The quality of the work is excellent, and the greens Poggenbeek uses here are characteristic of his oeuvre.
