Over JHR. MR J.A. (JAN) DE JONGE
Jhr. Mr. Johan Antoni (Jan) de Jonge was a Dutch lawyer and painter. The eldest son of a distinguished aristocratic family, he took a doctorate in law at Leiden in 1889 before devoting himself to painting. He lived and worked in The Hague, where he was a member of Pulchri Studio. De Jonge recorded his impressions chiefly in chalk, charcoal, watercolour and gouache, with a direct and assured touch. He favoured beach and sea views, figures, landscapes and townscapes, frequently imbued with a bright, sunlit atmosphere and children playing on the beach at Scheveningen. His study travels took him through Germany, among other places. Esteemed by his contemporaries, his name was mentioned alongside those of Arntzenius, Gabriël and Mesdag.
