Over A. (ANTOINE) VOLLON

Educated as an engraver and printer, Antoine Vollon was destined to follow in his father's footsteps as a decorator in Lyon. In 1859, he moved to Paris with his family determined to become an artist. Strongly inspired by Dutch 17th century still lifes, painting flowers but also everyday objects on the kitchen table became one of his specialties. He was active in artist circles and was friends with Alexandre Dumas, Honoré Daumier, Charles- Francois Daubigny, etc. After 1865 he received many awards, was a juror at the great "Salons," became Chevalier de la Legion d'Honeur; in short, he was a celebrated and successful artist. In several cities including Paris, streets and a squares are named after him. In 2004, the great Wildenstein gallery in New York organized a successful exhibition of more than 70 works by Vollon.
