Over G. (GUSTAVE) DE JONGHE

De Jonghe began as a pupil of his father Jean-Baptiste de Jonghe. He later attended the Academy in Brussels as a student of Jean-Louis Navez. He initially painted history pieces and biblical scenes. However, he became famous for his genre pieces, charming ladies in beautiful interiors: the woman as a jewel in her surroundings. His depiction of fabric is unsurpassed. One could see the influence from the 17th century, such as the paintings of Johannes Vermeer. He won several prizes in Belgium and a medal in Amsterdam in 1863. Later, de Jonghe experimented with oriental influences which were the focus of interest in the late 19th century.
