Over P. (PIETER) OYENS
Pieter Oyens was a Dutch painter, twin brother of David Oyens, with whom he lived and worked in Brussels for most of his career. Both brothers trained from childhood under Johan Hendrik Veldhuyzen before moving to Brussels around 1860 to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. A family inheritance afforded them a bohemian lifestyle, and from 1875 recognition followed, championed by critic Camille Lemonnier. Associated with La Société Libre des Beaux-Arts, they became known for genre scenes marked by keen personal observation, a lively, assured technique, and warm colour, alongside portraits and, to a lesser extent, still lifes and interiors. Both exhibited at the 1889 Paris World's Fair, where Pieter received an honourable mention. He married Auguste Krupp in 1893 and died of a stroke in February 1894, just over a month before the birth of their daughter.
