Over C. (CORNELIS) VREEDENBURGH
Born in Woerden, young Cornelis took advantage of the beautiful surroundings in which he grew up. He came from a family of house and art painters from Nieuwerbrug so the aptitude for drawing and painting was in his blood. Employed by his father Gerrit as a house painter, Cornelis began producing watercolors, drawings and etchings of townscapes and landscapes. Besides his father, from whom Cornelis received his first drawing lessons, his teachers were G.J. Roermeester and later also W.B. Tholen and P. Arntzenius. With Tholen he went out "into the green heart" of the province, sailing boats on the lakes. Vreedenburgh married the artist M. Schotel and together they left for several years to the unspoiled St. Tropez in southern France. Upon their return, they settled first in Hattem and later in Laren. Vreedenburgh traveled throughout the Netherlands looking for beautiful (mostly built-up) places to paint. With his wife, he left for Palestine to paint for some time. His work was very popular and he won several national and international awards. Queen Wilhelmina also bought some of his paintings. Cornelis Vreedenburgh's work is in several Dutch museums and private collections.
