L. (LOUIS) VALTAT

Louis Valtat was born in Dieppe and when he was 17 years old he applied for admission to the Academie Julian there. After winning several prizes he left for Paris in 1890 where he worked with Paul Signac, Renoir and others. Valtat was internationally orientated and took part in numerous exhibitions for example in 1900 "La libre Esthetique"in Brussels, in 1903 at the "Gebäude Secession"in Vienna, in 1906 the Secession in Berlin, Budapest and Prague. He was made Legion d'Honneur in 1927. After the 1940 exodus and the following "occupation Years"Louis Valtat had serious problems with his eyes and seldom left his workshop. He realized his last paintings in 1948.
