L. (LOUIS) VALTAT
1869 Dieppe - 1952 Paris
Louis Valtat was born in Dieppe and, at the age of 17, applied for admission to the Académie Julian there. After winning several prizes, he moved to Paris in 1890, where he worked alongside Paul Signac, Renoir and others. Valtat was internationally oriented and participated in numerous exhibitions, including 'La libre Esthetique' in Brussels in 1900, the Gebäude Secession in Vienna in 1903, and the Secession in Berlin, Budapest and Prague in 1906. In 1927 he was awarded the Legion d'Honneur. Following the exodus of 1940 and the subsequent occupation years, Louis Valtat experienced serious problems with his eyesight and rarely left his studio. He completed his final paintings in 1948.
