M. (MARCEL) MANGIN

Marcel Paul Maurice Stéphane Mangin was a French painter, watercolourist and draughtsman. He trained first as an architect at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where from 1871 he studied under Émile Vaudremer and was distinguished in construction studies. He subsequently turned to painting under Henri Harpignies (1819-1916) and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). Mangin painted landscapes, architecture and portraits, and became known as an Orientalist and Symbolist. His architectural training remained evident in the precise rendering of buildings and townscapes, while travels in North Africa yielded Orientalist subjects, among them street scenes at Blida and views of the oued. Between 1875 and 1914, he exhibited almost continuously at the Salons de Paris, receiving an honourable mention in 1895. He was a member of the Association Taylor from 1877 (sociétaire perpétuel) and was appointed Officier d'Académie. He produced decorations for the museum of the École des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris, which also holds work by his hand.
