This delightfully romantic cityscape was painted by one of the great masters of the Dutch 19th century. The carefully composed work is among one of his most popular paintings and he made several versions of it. In this very detailed work you can feast your eyes endlessly, and all of it under a genuine Dutch summer cloud-filled sky. A beautifully bright light irradiates the entire painting. The bright palette, the smooth brush technique and a sharp eye for detail are typical for Dutch Romanticism, which idealised the beauty of Holland and liked to refer to the 17th-century paintings.
